What is Ladies of the Lake you ask? Ladies of the Lake is a ladies only wakeboard clinic held at Perth Wake Park. The clinic is organised and ran by our very own local Ronix rider Symonne Kennedy. If you’ve been thinking about giving wake boarding a try or you’re keen to meet other ladies with the same love for wake boarding and would like to progress and learn new skills then this is the perfect clinic. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first ever time riding, there’s a separate beginner lake where you will be taught how to stand up and ride along before hitting the main lake. The cost of the clinic is $60 and includes a hire board, helmet and vest, 2 hours of coaching and a delicious healthy breakfast to finish.
The morning begins at 8:00am however it’s good to get there about 15-20 mins earlier to get your gear on (bathers and wetsuit because yes it’s still a tad cold) and be ready to hit the water by 8am. If it’s your first time to Perth Wake park, you’ll be required to watch a short safety video. If you want to save time on the day, you can watch the video online by heading to the Perth Wake Park website (see link above).
The last clinic was held on Saturday 22nd September 2018. After a quick briefing by Ladies of the Lake organiser Symonne, it was time to ride. The weather was absolutely stunning and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect morning with a tinge of summer air and a perfectly still lake due to no wind.
After a couple of warm up laps it was time to get serious and practice some new skills. Lucky for us we had the very talented Craig and Symonne to coach us and help with whatever we wanted to work on. Craig and Symonne were able to ride next to us, giving some super helpful and encouraging tips on the water. Since I wanted to work on my switch (opposite foot) riding and start doing spins from switch, Craig rode next to me and helped me work on carving towards and hitting some of the obstacles in switch, I found this really helpful and felt myself becoming more confident. It was amazing to see so much progress, smiles and stoke from everyone. Most of the beginner riders were getting up on the main lake, there was 360 spins going down and a first attempt at a front roll from one of the younger shredders. The support and encouragement amongst the group was incredible.
After a solid two hours of riding, it was time to stop for a breakfast feast. The breakfast spread was colourful and very delicious, consisting of muesli and yoghurt cups, fresh fruit, protein balls, banana bread and coconut water. The lady behind this amazing spread is Steph, she always creates delicious, fresh meals and snacks which is the why the cafe at Perth Wake Park is always a hit!
The next Ladies of the Lake session is coming up on Saturday 2nd February 2019, spots can be booked and paid for through the Ladies of the Lake Facebook page. The weather is warming up and so is the lake so make sure you get your tickets now to reserve a spot. See you all there. Be sure to bring smiles and stoke!
